archaeological sites in Crete and it is famous mainly for the Minoan Palace, from which they originate and most current findings of global interest such as the Phaistos Disc which is one of the from Chania, visitors encounter the signs of the ancient city of Aptera. This is one of the most powerful city-States of ancient Minoan Crete, which was founded in the 8th century BC and it was the main commercial hub of Crete in ancient times. Its name, according to tradition, comes from the Sirens, since, during a mythological music competition in the temple between the Muses and the Sirens, the Sirens lost, and were so distressed that they lost their wings and left wingless, (or \u201captera\u201d in ancient Greek.) Falassarna are located 59 km west of Chania and is one of the most popular tourist destinations. They include 5 spectacular beaches, stretching for several kilometers and stands out for its beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters. North, just a few meters from the beach, there is\u00a0 the archaeological site of ancient Falassarna,\u00a0 discovered about the 5th century BC and was one\u00a0 important ancient city of western Crete with rich history. southwest\u00a0of the archaeological site,\u00a0while\u00a0the ancient name\u00a0of the region remains\u00a0unknown.\u00a0Here\u00a0the visitor can admire\u00a0the\u00a0Royal Manor House\u00a0or\u00a0the\u00a0small\u00a0Palace of\u00a0Agia Triada\u00a0which\u00a0was built around\u00a01600\u00a0BC and probably was\u00a0the summer residence\u00a0of any King\u00a0of Phaistos city, according to\u00a0the legends.\u00a0One of\u00a0the most important\u00a0discoveries\u00a0of the region is\u00a0the\u00a0sarcophagus stone, discovered\u00a0in the\u00a0dead-city,\u00a0on a pit-\u00a0tomb,\u00a0and is the only sample of a sarcophagus stone with painted decoration.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_background” The passage through the gorge is a unique and breathtaking experience since the hiker is faced with the majesty and beauty of wild nature during the entire route. The most famous part of the gorge is the part of “Iron Gates”, where the canyon sides are approaching the width of four meters and climp up to the height of 500 m. The temple was completed many years later with special permit granted by the Turks. It is located 19 km away from Chania and it is one of the few male monasteries in Greece. Also it is called \u201cLady of the angels\u00a0Monastery\u201d\u00a0because it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Externally, it reminds Venetian fortress with towers at the four corners of which only two have been preserved. The yard of the fortress has rectangular shape and around it 50 vaulted cells are built. The Maritime Museum of Crete was founded in 1973 in Chania, at the\u00a0Akti koundourioti , just at the entrance of the historic Venetian Fortress of Firka. It is the second most important naval museum in Greece due to its age and its exhibition. Here, visitors can admire a ship model of the Minoan era, the Minoan ship, constructed from original materials with tools and construction processes of the 15th century. B.C. The Historical Folklore Museum of Gavalochori was founded in 1967 in Gavalohori village of Chania and inaugurated in September 1993. It\u00a0is housed\u00a0in a magnificent Venetian building with intense Turkish intervention. Hiking the canyon is easy and takes about three hours. The traveler as it crosses the gorge has the opportunity to admire the lush vegetation that initially consists of oaks trees and oleanders bushes that grow in the cracks of rocks \u00a0and then their position get big pines, Oaks and plane trees. His Fatigue however is compensated by the impressive landscape formed by huge trees on the steep and rugged slopes of the rocks on which grow the endemic herb of Crete. Diktamos Gorge differs from other gorges of Crete as its direction is not from north to south as usual, but from east to west, that goes parallel with the coastline of Crete.

Also the chapel of St. John Damialis built within you rock from the 10th century (rebuilt in 1947) and next to the small tunnel leading to the beautiful beach of Damialis with pebbles and deep clear water will charm you. The monastery has a long history that goes back to the 9th century, when it was founded. Near the monastery created the Orthodox Academy of Crete, a very important Orthodox religious institution.
